It is a character encoding - something like file format, but not exactly. If you are using Windows, install Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus-plus.org/), open your .ly file with Notepad++, go to menu Encoding, click "Convert to UTF-8" and save the file. It should now compile with special characters.
