Could you describe what happens more precisely? Are you opening files through File > Open in Frescobaldi, or through the Finder? When Frescobaldi is unresponsive, what do you see on the screen? Is there a window? Does the window contain the file? > Lilypond will not start at all on its own. The Apple system offers a choice > to open a unix window or terminate the program.
