Hang in there, Peter! LilyPond is challenging to learn. So are all the
other notation programs I have ever seen. (Or if not, they're not very
capable, either.) And some of the LilyPond projects on the IMSLP and
CPDL websites have file structures and coding styles that are not the
easiest to follow.
One approach you could try is starting with a standard template -
something like what Kieren wrote here, perhaps, or one from the LilyPond
documentation:

With these, it's easier to understand what's happening with the code.
Then you could try copying and pasting the pitch-and-duration code from
the project you want.

broken projects from online music repositories...
