Looks like you are looking for \partial 4 here. Cf. <http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.18/Documentation/learning/advanced-rhythmic-commands#partial-measure> Since we are talking about the Learning Manual in the most obvious place (even without knowing that what you are looking for is called "partial measure" or "anacrusis"), I am a bit at a loss how you one can spend hours reading the manual without finding this. Looking in the Notation Reference, I find this info at <http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.18/Documentation/notation/displaying-rhythms#upbeats> I'll admit that "Displaying Rhythms" is sort-of vague as a chapter heading.
