Ah, yes; shows how I'd not thought through the problem. Now if music and its notation had been designed by an IEEE committee in the late twentieth century (instead of by multiple communities in multiple countries over many hundreds of years) it would have been more straightforward :-)
I'm impressed with how much of the oddity of music notation lilypond does handle. Far more than any other scoring program I've any acquaintance with.
