As someone who used LilyPad for the first decade of my Lilypond time, I totally understand the desire to maintain that "turnkey installation" thing… But in 2003 (when I first took up Lilypond), I’m not sure Frescobaldi even existed — and it certainly wasn’t as robust and (IMO) indispensable as it is now. So, my vote would be to try to do a Darwin-only version of Lilypond, and position Frescobaldi as the "default editor" for Mac users.
