I understand the intransigence of users and that everything grows like Topsy if you try to satisfy everybody's wildest dreams. I should try not to compare too much with the known functionality of Excel. I realise that it may not always be directly comparable but the fine line is identifying whether it's an intentional divergence or an unwitting lack of compatibility. And of course, the paucity of resources compared to the industry behemoth could impact the priorities.
