Sorry to howevermuch-inadvertently partway-hijack a thread, but given 
time-differences &c, here goes:

Can you give the output of 'printenv'  .

Can you go 'round the loop again - i.e. fresh tarball-unpack, etc - and do:

  CFLAGS="-O2 -g" make

(i.e. this time _don't_ do: CFLAGS="-fno-exceptions -fno-rtti" make )

That's _basically_ what, aiui, was one of the suggestions from Ken's messages.
