Might I throw a hat into this ring.

Does an LFS system really need XML parsing, from expat or
libxml2, as a feature?

The suggestion above is that gettext only needs it for Glade support.

Will Glade ever be part of LFS?

To add an extra package to LFS just to support a possible use
of Glade at some point seems like "package creep".

Rather than just throw a negative hat into the ring though, my hat
is reversible and may be worn at a positive tilt, so as to suggest
that the scenario here is probably more a case for :

a) an LFS patch and/or instructions, that build gettext without Glade
support, or which ignore/remove the xgettext test failure

b) a "reinstall gettext with Glade support" added to BLFS as a
dependency of the Glade instructions and so keeping expat and
  libxml2 in BLFS.

I have little issue with repeating an install of an LFS package within
BLFS when/if one goes "Beyond" the facilities that LFS really requires
of a given package.

I am sure that that approach was the LFS vogue at one point and
was trying to think of similar example packages (basic build in LFS,
enhanced build in BLFS) but nothing sprang to mind, though I am
sure there was something (possibly net-tools, or similar, related?)
once upon a time, assuming there no longer is anything.

Furthermore, not making a choice between expat and libxml2 at the
LFS level, as the thread inplies will be the case, with libxml2 already
apprently delcared the "winner", would seem to allow a BLFS installer
who comes to install Glade, the choice of the XML parser they need to
deploy, because gettext looks likely to be able to support either.

Hoping that my hat won't be stamped on too heavily,
Kevin
