The hint itself could also use a more emphatic

already built numerous LFS systems and know exactly how the whole build
process works.
Whether or not you run into trouble with package users doesn't
depend so much on your LFS-building experience as it depends on the kind
of software you want to install. In the years that I've been using the
hint I don't remember one serious problem.
It does depend on LFS experience, but in a way it's no different from
just about any other variation on the book. If you are trying pkg-users
(or any other major book deviation) on, say, the very first LFS build,
you will likely have a number of problems because you don't understand
the build process (this goes even more for users who don't even meet the
necessary basic linux prerequisites for building LFS in the first
place). Same goes for using ALFS before having successfully completed a
build manually (which tends to be the *other* main source of problems,
but that's another issues entirely...)
It is the cause of many user issues reported in the support
lists and #lfs-support IRC channel.
I don't know about the IRC channel but w.r.t (b)lfs-support I
cannot understand that statement. I read those lists and I'm not seeing
many package user related questions. I don't receive a lot of
feedback/questions regarding the hint at all. So from my perspective it
looks like either not many people use it or they use it and don't have
trouble with it.
Can you provide some pointers to these "many user issues" you're talking
about? I'd really like to know what kind of trouble people have with the
hint. And feel free to send people to me when they have trouble with the
hint and you can't help them.
Much of the issues are usually due to users simply not reading, and most
are issues that the user should be able to figure out on their own. We
just had a problem a couple days ago where a program couldn't find
libgcc_s.so - the problem is that the user missed the part of the hint
where it mentions that specific case. The main problem with package
users is that, when there is a problem, it typically takes a while to
find the source, even for the few users who actually bother to mention
immediately that they're using it...most people just come in and report
the problem, and it's only *after* a number of attempts to fix it that
the user mentions "oh, BTW, I'm using pkg-users...does that matter?"
Yes, we *do* frequently have problems with users having issues when
they've deviated from the book in a number of different ways but fail to
mention it (until of course we have already spent a large amount of time
debugging with the assumption that the book was being followed
verbatim), however this happens more often with pkg-users than anything
else. I can only guess that users don't really see it as a "deviation"
because it is mentioned in the book as being "specifically for LFS".
