The wrapper scripts are doing the same thing you have in DIY. I don't know why you would call it bogus without testing? I did test out those changes during my last build around the same time I proposed them. I found the wrapper scripts useful when I was trying out different things with the toolchain to see how they the compiler and linker interact/affect with each other when some flags are changed. Also it allowed me to keep the /tools untouched in chroot phase. It also saved rebuilding ld with a LIB_PATH of /usr/lib:/lib. All win-win IMO. Though, I had assumed that the editors would have tested it out before putting it in the book.
