Why do you have to contact them anyway? The normal way to add a mailinglist is to just fill out the submit form at <http://gmane.org/subscribe.php> and be done with it. Then the archive should go back at least as far as 2003. Hmm, I don't see any possibility to enter the archive address in the form. Maybe that's done manually.
