"Vaughan is a shrewd tactician and a good leader. He
is also a fine Test batsman. However, his record as a
one-day cricketer speaks for itself, and he should not
be chosen again."
It's this sort of bollocks that does my head in.
You're either a good batter and can play at the
highest level or you can't. Surely a 'fine test
batsmen' should be averaging more that 20 in this
world cup ???? All the Aussies are managing to do it
and even some of our batsmen who haved proved
themselves at test level recently have managed to
average over 50 (Collingwood and Pietersen). So to say
Vaughan can't bat at one day level is like saying
Wayne Rooney would be no good at 5-a-side. What a
joke. Why can't the cricketing commentators say it how
it is. And you've done that Tim - Vaughan, at this
moment in time isn't good enough as captain, batter or
fielder to play at this level. He isn't fit, isn't in
form and as a result isn't inspiring his team. You
only had to look at the England attitude against
S.Africa and there's no way that Agnew's comments
about him being 'a good leader' can be applied. I
agree with Tim, let him get back to playing for
Yorkshire (as captain) ,regain his form and then who
knows maybe he can return to the England set up. I
don't see it though.
BUt so as you all don't forget - Vaughan's crowning
moment was the ashes 2005. His batting in that series
was terrible apart from one innings of 166. He only
got 326 runs in total from 10 innings. Take the 166
off and in his other 9 innings his average was around
18 (just about on par with his batting currently).
Even with the 166 in his average was only 32. Jones,
Strauss, Pietersen, Trescothick, Flintoff all had
higher averages. I think he is lucky to have managed
an England team that for one Summer was on fire -
especially Pietersen and Flintoff. With those two
playing at the top of their form and your two openers
scoring regular 50's your going to have a chance
against anyone. Mcgrath got injured and we just nicked
the ashes. Vaughan is a hero shouts everyone. Not me.
I watched the series and he was losing it then. He's
not as good as people think, and I think people are
slowly coming to terms with this.
Having said that I think he'd make an excellent
Yorkshire captain.
