You're completely wrong. At the time the ball was played, Brown was already anticipating the cross and had stretched his leg practically to the goal line, playing Viduka onside. It was shown again and again on TV, leaving no doubt whatsoever as to the colossal nature of the mistake. (Colossal in that it cost us untold millions.)
