Offside by interference is still in effect, it has just been clarified as A player in an offside position may be penalised before playing or touching the ball if, in the opinion of the referee, no other team-mate in an onside position has the opportunity to play the ball.
If an opponent becomes involved in the play and if, in the opinion of the referee, there is potential for physical contact, the player in the offside position shall be penalised for interfering with an opponent. People have been stood behind the West Stand and still been able to see both arms. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Mark Humphries Sent: 15 August 2006 17:18 To: Woolmer, David (F&CM AMS); [email protected] Subject: RE: [LU] HORSFIELD CHARGED BY FA I thought the points were that firstly it was a marginal decision but as you said TV replays suggested Viduka was inches offside, and the crucial second point that given his position in relation to the players - not being in line and also his view of Viduka being obstructed - that he could not actually have known for sure if Viduka was offside. He guessed. Also, the time between the cross and the deflection going in meant he had to raise his flag after the ball was in the net. He may have thought Viduka was offside and interfering (I believe that was a requirement back then) when the ball was crossed, but Brown got there before Viduka and therefore, in my totally biased opinion, giving a marginal guess in that situation was wrong. But as you said, technically correct - he just wouldn't have known it. ******* This message and any attachment are confidential and may be privileged or otherwise protected from disclosure.
