I have it on very good authority (admittedly a few years ago) that O'Niell
does not want to take over at ManUre after Taggart, he would however like to
take over after his immediate successor gets the bullet. In fairness to him he's
had personal problems and walked away from money, fame, adoration, etc. at
Celtic but either he (or his agent) have been very good at keeping him in the
public eye ever since, he's somehow been "off the record" linked to every
managerial vacancy that's come up since - England, Newcastle,
Middlesborough, etc.
Also if you go behind the hype, how good is he really?
He got Wycombe into the League - with by the standard of the time large
amounts of money to play with.
He got Leicester promoted and a couple of Fizzy Pop Cups - however
they failed to progress beyond Round One of the UEFA Cup on each occasion and
never threatened in the League.
He won the two horse race that is the SPL and got to a UEFA
Cup final.
OK its a better CV than Blackwell or Colin but no better than say Steve
MacClaren or Sam Allardyce......neither of whom are considered to be at the same
level for some reason.
Finally, the odds of him coming to Leeds are about the same as Trinidad and
Tobago's of winning the World Cup. If we couldn't attract him at the height of
Ridsdales "throw money at everything" lunacy we certainly won't
now.
