Speaking as an honourary Gael, I can only say that the way O'Neil ran
Celtic was based on his being in absolute charge (and often that
appeared to be in charge of things off the pitch as well as on). Yes he
instilled a work ethic in his team, and that produced very boring
football (acceptable when 9 games out of ten you are up against teams
playing ten men behind the ball such is the inbalance of Scottish
football at that level). At the end of the day his undoing was the
team's brick wall: Europe. Getting to Seville was as good as it gets,
like Valencia for Leeds. And that may be the crux of the matter Martin
O'Neil is wonderful for clubs at the domestic League level, but when it
comes to Europe and all its riches he fails (see also Leicester). Maybe
he could go to Old Scumford and Learn the trick with an experienced team
that has been in Europe over a long period, but even the mighty scummers
have problems these days when venturing across the Channel. Which is
why I think he would probably accept a job with a sleeping giant which
needs to sort out its domestic situation. However he is also expensive
and his spending at Paradise was always criticised to the point when Wee
Gordie took over he had a very interesting er, defensive midfield. It
took several matches into the team's first season under Strachan to
achieve championship chasing form.
Here's a smile though, imagine O'Neil's character rubbing cosily up to
Bates'.
Nah, it will never happen. Bates wants psychophants and he's got one
already (in fact I sometimes think he's got about 20,000)

Also if you go behind the hype, how good is he really?
