Yup, if they are claiming a straight breach of contract then they can only
claim for damages resulting from the breach.. ie loss of income etc.

However, I think they could reasonably claim that of course Harris wouldn't
make such a big impact in his first season back, but it was the second
season when they suffered.

Not only did Bradford win the grand final, throughout the season McGuire was
injured or carrying an injury. Harris would of course been McGuire's direct
replacement. On that basis I think they have a case.

Also, had he rejoined Leeds then if they didn't feel they needed him they
could have then agreed to sell him to Bradford (or whoever), so they lost
out on the fee.

Ultimately he signed a contract and he is in breach of that contract. Leeds
should get something otherwise whats the point in having playing contracts
if players can simply disregard them if they want?

Ok, Harris might not have realised the terms of the contract to start with
(not that that is an excuse in law..), but everyone certainly did know
before he actually left Cardiff and signed for Bradford. In other words he
signed for Bradford, and Bradford signed him knowing full well there was an
existing contract in place.

I believe that part of the issue has been decided in court - there was an
existing contract, and Harris/Bradford/Cardiff were in breach. Its now just
a question of compensation?
