Actually, I've played around with that.  If you make sure both ends send the 
stuff in-band, it 
generally works pretty well.  Its the out-of-band stuff that introduces delays 
and drops, from my 
experience.

The problem is, my vendor won't pass DTMF in-band.  I doubt that Vonage and the 
like do, either. 
But for point-to-point, its usually possible.
