George,

I think you might have failed to see William's point - "Things Change"
There will be a time that some of the things that we are doing and/or
selling today will be sold over the counter. I was in the cell phone
business back in '89 (and still am today). We were able to make some bucks
back then because it was a specialty product that had to be "sold" to the
end user. The profits in cellular today is tough since it is an over the
counter item and everyone is selling them.

In the phone business, service is still the key. I agree the money is in
design, installation, and AMCs. We keep and get new customers because we
are not the cheapest in town, but provide a quality service and my techs
represent the company well. Panasonic produces a quality product, that's
why I've been selling it since '94. Yea, they are not perfect, but show me
a perfect manufacturer. Microsoft is a powerful presence in the marketplace
and they will come out with something to make more money. My task is to
find out how to make a profit from it. I would be stupid to think that what
I am doing today will be the same thing 5 or 10 years from now. Technology
is changing faster now than it has ever before. We just need to keep our
eyes open, look for the opportunity and move forward with it. Got a crystal
ball????

Actually, the question to ask yourselves is "What will the end users be
buying?"

And how can you position yourself to provide it?

You don't want to be rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, and
smirking that the bow is underwater, but you are still dry.

If there is a demand, someone will be filling it. Would you like to be
included?

Lots of interesting things are going on with Microsoft's Live Communications
Server for instance....We may not need a Panasonic at all, just standardized
VOIP hardware and user-installable, user-upgradeable, and user-programmable
software.

I suspect there will still be plenty of companies selling to end users. You
could be quite right that they won't be selling Panasonic. End users may no
longer be interested in Panasonic if it is easier/cheaper/better/ to use
newer or more innovative equipment.

End users will still need installation services, and most will need the
programming and configuration.

Don't wait until you can buy a VOIP system at BestBuy or WalMart/Sams .
Eventually everyone will be buying the equipment "dirt cheap" on a commodity
basis. The bucks will be made from your services, not the hardware.

Plan ahead.

Cheers,
WB

Hmmm wonder what will happen to
all those companies that sold equipment
dirt cheap to end users once the td is out of production?
