Paul, you should install a rs-232 to rs-422 converter in each end.
rs-422 allows serial communication up to 1200 meter using two twistedpair copper cable (cat3 is ok) For more information about rs-422 check this link: http://www.hw.cz/english/docs/rs485/rs485.html A rs-232 to rs-422 converter costs about U$S 50.- You can choose any because rs-232 is standard and there is no compatibility problem.
