Sorry to say this, but I think it's fried. We have one doing the same thing. Power light on solid, caret prompt response on the serial port, and we're using a known good cable setup. It failed after about 6 months in service at a customer's site. We tried resetting, reinitializing, etc. with no result. Finally called Panasonic Tech support, hoping they would have a magic fix. No luck. They agreed that it was now dead. We sent it off today for warranty repair.
I seriously doubt that you have a cable problem. Although not all null-modem adapters are created equal, the Radio Shack ones work pretty well with Panasonic.
