I have a TVS50 I'm just getting to know. I have the installation manual,
but I'm having some trouble getting off the ground. Last night, when I
first powered it up, I had it connected to my PC with a serial cable. It
seemed to do all the right things, except that the communication was
uni-directional -- it was displaying the startup output, but it wouldn't
accept input. I have read that a null modem adapter is needed, so while I
was surprised that I'd get as far as I had with the wrong kind of cable, I
figured I'd pick one up at RS the next day, and all would be well.
Meanwhile, I figured there'd be little harm in initializing it, so I set
the DIP switches to 5 and powered up. It still displayed the right stuff,
and warned me to set them back to zero, etc., which I did. I then left it
powered on and connected to the PC.

Pick up the story today, after purchasing said null modem adapter. I power
down, hook up the serial cable, wait three minutes, and power back up
(that is, plug it in to the AC again). Now all I get is a greater than
prompt. And worse, the power light just comes on and stays on. No blinking
startup phase. Well, I decide that I don't really know what kind of cable
I have, maybe it is a null modem cable anyway, so I go to RS again and
pick up a plain, straight-thru F-F 9 pin cable. I attach the null modem
adapter. I power down, connect things up, wait, and power up. Same thing
-- just a caret. Every few characters I type now result in a new line with
a caret. Almost feels like a port speed mismatch, but I tried setting the
DIP switch to 1 to reset the com port parameters, go through the
shutdown/power up, but still nothing. I've gone back to my original cable,
which at least gave me output, but it's no better than the other cable
now.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong, or what the lack of blinking in the power
light means?

Thanks for any leads.
