Before I express my POV, I just want to leave these 2 disclaimers on the table... 1) Although I am an engineer, I am not a mechanical or aerospace one. I am not an expert on the matter. 2) I am not familiar with the plans and instructions for the KR-2 yet. So I cannot refer to them. Not all bolts are designed to apply clamping force. Some, like the castle nuts, are used to keep things in place. From my perspective, unless the plans specifically define the function of the nut or call for a specific torque to be applied to it, one could argue that this is to keep the connecting rods in place. Just for reference, the YouTube link below shows the use of a castle nut in a wing folding mechanism (please, forward it to minute 10:15). Yes, the folding mechanism is different and this is an ultralight (with different magnitude of forces applied to the structure).
