My experience is just the opposite.  I'm using Maule tailwheel (anti-shimmy) springs, same set I started with 15 years ago, and I have a great feel in steering.  I went with springs for grass strips.  They can be rough and if I have half rudder input for an instant and the tailwheel bumps the ground I'm assuming the spring will help reduce the shock of the side loads to the cable system all the way to my rudder peddles.

Just one mans opinion but it has worked for me.
