I know of no "landing" accidents due to over heated brakes but that was
not my point. I have read of an aircraft loss from excessive taxi
testing and over heating the brakes. Nose draggers should take that in
to account. You can still do extensive taxi test in nose draggers, just
watch your brake temps.
It all comes down to the aircraft and the pilot. Self assess your own
abilities and comfort level with the particular airplane you happen to
be testing. I've gone both ways on four different aircraft first
flights. A steerable nose wheel Zenith 601 I did no taxi test. I had
good steering to the runway and early it the takeoff roll so I just took
off and flew it. Two STOL type, one a nose dragger and one a tail
dragger, I made several runs to verify directional control, and the KR I
probably made a dozen or so high speed runs.
Some practice, practice, practice, and still mess up the landing, some
practice, practice, practice, till they damage the airplane before ever
leaving the ground, and others just go out and fly. It comes down to the
pilot and the airplane. If you're comfortable, go for it and do your
best not to hurt yourself. No mater the amount of practice that first
landing will have a pucker factor that will put creases in the upholstery.
