Ok so let me see if I can explain the fix I would use.  I'll call them C plates 
for lack of a better name. Make a round plate that is 1/4 inch larger and 1/4 
smaller than the radius.   Mark and drill matching holes and tap them for your 
screws.  Cut the plate in half and insert each in the tank and hold in place 
with 1  very short screw on each plate.  Place the sender in the hole and 
install very long screws in the remaining holes and start the threads.  reach 
in behind and remove the small screws.  Tighten all screws and then remove them 
and replace with the normal screws one at a time.  Hope that make sense.
