I imported two rough quarter sawn spruce planks (8" x 3"x 12 feet from memory)
from Canada years ago by ship and had it milled and finished to size by a local
cabinet maker to get all the pieces I needed. There was some wastage due to the
cutting process and rejection due knots/ flitches/ ring count etc but it worked
out a lot cheaper and I have been slowly selling off good left over bits over
here in Australia to further defray costs.

Now I find native to Australia another conifer called Hoop Pine which also does
the job albeit it a little heavier and it is laminated to make select grade
ply.....cheaper again. This wood was also used in certain aircraft built over
here during WW2 and there are aviation specifications still available for it.

Subject: KR> spar material

Colin recently expressed the lack of availability of spar cap material for the
center section main spar without laminating and the Brit's not accepting that
method without testing. My grey mater has firmed up a bit lately but I
recalled seeing the instructions somewhere of laminating material together to
get the required size of material. I found it in a 1981 Wick's catalog. WIck's
was probably the main supplier of material and I'm hoping the Brit's will
accept the fact that laminating was an accepted procedure and probably hundreds
of KR's have flown using that method. Check out the following:

Fourth item down and then read the * note below the bottom of the list.

And my wife thinks I'm disorganized.
