There are ways around an electrical system. One of my fellow EAA chapter members flies a Champ, it has a starter and micro 760 radio which are powered by stand alone battery. There is no engine run alternator, they just charge the battery after each flight. Seems to work fine, engine is a c75 which starts easily and the radio draw is minimal.

I am refurbishing the Kr2 Dumbo. Took off the worn out vw engine. Replacing the retract gear with fixed gear. A continental C-85-8 engine is going on the front. Its an 85 with the 85 cam, o-200 crank, rods and NFS 10:1 high compression pistons. Only 93 octane or higher will go in it. I'll have a Odessy battery to power handheld radio and my $150 av8r GPS. Back up would be Avare on the cell phone. This airplane is for fun and not atrue cross country plane. Of course I guess it could be. I like dependability and being able to fly safely down low where's you see the people and the sights. As for a starter I guess I'll have to buy a Trunk Monkey! I've heard they have had a recall on them so I may have to improvise a home made starter. I'm not an educated man, so don't do this at home. This is not my main ride.
