Kayak,

Afraid I don't know of any KRs nowadays operating in this fashion (no
electrical system), which is probably why no one responded. Without
electrical system, you are hand starting. If engine goes out, you have no
inflight capability to restart. Your handheld radio will be very limited in
duration. 

Staying out of controlled airspace is fairly easy if you don't live near any
large airports. I flew without a transponder for years before I installed
one. I always used a handheld comm radio myself for a few years as well.
But, I always have had an electrical system. If you build your KR with no
electrical, I do recommend you build it so you can add this stuff later. At
some point you will want it if you end up flying it regularly.
