I just read a report from a Panther builder about his first flight. It
started out as a "high speed taxi test". I assume that because it was only
to be a test, he must have not followed his pre-flight check list. Thus,
the flaps were full down. The plane jumped up off the runway, and he then
had no real option other than to apply full power and take off. He still
did not realize that his flaps were down and when the airspeed increased,
the detent for the flap slipped and with a loud bang and a sudden drop in
altitude, the full flap setting went to full retracted. He and his plane
survived the flight with no damage to either.

I also have story about high speed taxi testing that did not end so well.
Maybe we will talk about that at the next KR Gathering.

The opinions expressed among the highly experienced pilots at my airport are
simple and the same. Do not put your plane on the runway if you do not
fully intend to take off.
