When I got my Pietenpol, it had recycled Cleveland masters (10-34s or similar, off a Cessna), and the builder had installed a Bowden-style cable on each side of the cockpit to actuate the parking brakes. Those old-style brakes such as were used on older Cessnas were very simple steel tabs that slid on the shaft of the actuator and the parking brakes were set by braking firmly, then pulling on the parking brake lever to 'jam' the tabs on the shafts to hold the brakes locked when the brake pedals were released. The builder of my Piet used the parking brakes to hold the plane while it was prop-started, but I never liked the hokey setup and when my Cleveland masters grew to be unreliable, I replaced them with Matcos and ditched the parking brakes. There are times when I wish I still had them though, for hand-propping. My airplane has no electrical system.
