Hi Owen,

Most of the stuff you'll find around will be for lead acid batteries. Not
all LiFePO4 batteries are drop in replacements for lead acid, even though
most are marketed that way. Make sure the LiFePO4 batteries you choose have
the inbuilt smarts to tolerate whatever alternator/regulator combination
you have. Without protection the voltage spikes most automotive type
regulators produce will damage a LiFePO4 battery and there have been
catastrophic consequences.

Also, if you're running your ignition (or anything else critical) from a
lithium battery you might want to be aware the discharge curve is quite
different from lead acid. Can't remember the exact numbers, but at a
certain point there's a very sudden drop in voltage from something useable
(around 10V?) to next to nothing. Not an issue if you're powering
everything from the alternator, but something to be aware of if the
alternator fails in flight.

Cheers,

Tony
