The Facets are more reliable than they may appear, and are dirt simple. 
The stock mechanical pump is certainly less reliable. 

 Having said that, you need two pumps, each fed from a different
battery, and each with it's own switch (or double pole double throw
switch) to ensure redundancy.  With that combination, you almost can't
go wrong.  See http://www.n56ml.com/fuel/ for excruciating details of
how I did this on my Corvair powered plane, which is also how the 2180cc
VW is done (except for the wing tanks and recirculation system).  I use
a little sealed lead acid UPS battery that weighs under three pounds for
the fuel pump backup.  They draw about .8A per hour, so they'll run a
long time on a small battery.
