Christo Whoa, tricky question.Do I understand it correctly? The counter weight is not just a matter of heavier or lighter than the elevator. It's weight is some what dependent on the lenght of the arm supporting that weight. The longer the arm the lighter the weight. (The Lever Principal). .The closer you are to the elevator hinge line, the more force (weight) you will need to balance it.
