I too had concerns of roll over protection.  That's why I went the fixed
windshield route.  I formed the windshield bow and turtledeck bows
using 5 layers of 1/8" ply with a layer of glass between each layer.  The
bows are approx 3/4" thick and attach directly to the top longerons.
The turtledeck bow is located nearly over the rear spar with the additional
vertical braces.  The photo at:   http://mysite.verizon.net/flesner/grin.jpg
gives a general idea of the thickness of the two bows.  I hope I never have
to test this totally UN-ENGINEERED structure.
