As suggested by someone else (Brian, I think), your hole in the outer center of the diameter of the tube could have been due to being pinched when the two wheel halves were put together. I had the same kind of flat with my KR-1, and I, too, cut a approx 2 inch wide rectangle of plastic (cut from a milk bottle) and laid it flat, along with some talcum powder, between the slightly aired tube and the split before bolting the halves together. I just left the plastic in there and pumped the tube the rest of the way up. No flats after that.
