I always fly cross country with my knee board strapped on and my sectional neatly folded and attached along with a pencil or pen. Although possible, it is not likely that the engine and the battery will both die at the same time. Especially in the case of the GPS, I always leave home with a new set of dry cells in the box and in the unit just in case. If all else fails I would just use the training I received to look for a suitable place to park.
