Phil,
Yes, the use of the board will steepen your glide and descent rate. I
generally drop the board to half position at 100 mph on base leg. This will
drop the speed quickly to 85 mph. On final and about 1 mile out I drop the
board fully. This is like slamming on the brakes...the plane very quickly
slows down to 65 mph depending where you keep the nose. Amazingly, when the
brake is lowered, the nose pitches up...you would think the drag would cause
it to pitch down. Touchdown is around 60 mph. I have accidentally taken off
with the board fully extended. Rotation and takeoff speed were the same but
the plane would not climb higher than 300' nor would it get over 80 mph. It
would maintain altitude which is a good thing because under the pressure of
trying to figure out why I could not climb, I used up several miles of air.
Once I realized the brake was down, I slowly raised it and away I went. I
have not actually done the numbers on gliding in flight configuration and in
landing configuration to see exactly what the difference is. If you need
those numbers, let me know and I will do the test.
