I've done something similar with my KR-1...
I wouldn't put the reinforcement layers on until you
pull the skin off, otherwise you will have the bumps
to contend with upon finishing...

setup...

I did the reinforcement rib later as it was just a tad
mushy for me (4 layers of 5.8oz cloth).

I used Epoxy, and the whole layup took about 4 hours
to do (the plug took 20 or so!)  Took about 1/3-1/2
gal I would say to do the whole thing.
