Hi Peter, I have the Jabiru 2200 (85hp) in my stock KR2 and could not be happier, well the 3300 (120hp) would have been better :-)
Why I went the Jabiru over a VW. First of all I am/was a motor mechanic and it's been more than 20 years since I worked on a motor (and I don't want to start again). Pros: Jabiru is lighter Purpose built Quick to install Easy to install Proven reliability Locally built (I live just up the road some 1400 km) Cheap to maintain Good support Cons: Expensive (not really) 3300 RPM prop speed - a bit fast Can only use timber props (That's all I can think of) The 2200 is about the same HP as a VW but is 25kg lighter, while the 3300 is about the same weight as a VW but 120HP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (big grin). For me the limiting factor was the weight. Also I have no doubt that I can built an engine but I chose not to for the following reasons: Not enough time available (have to balance with family commitments) The extra weight of a VW There are so many variations, which ones are right. An engine I build is not tried and proven, and it's my life (and family's) up there. I would probably consider a Vair in a KR2S if I could find several here in Australia, but I don't have a KR2S..............yet :-) regards Barry Kruyssen Cairns, Australia RAA 19-3873 k...@bigpond.com http://www.users.bigpond.com/kr2/kr2.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Peter Drake Hi John I looked into the corvair engine. The problem in the UK is that the PFA will only give a 1100lbs MAUW for the KR2s and the Corvair is relatively heavy compared with VWs, Jabirus or even Rotax 912s, leaving you very little space for you, fuel and girlfriend /wife etc. I am still undecided as my partner in this project has more money than me and wants to use a Jabiru 120 ££££££.
