You need a long bit and I would never try drilling from both sides and expect it to meet somewhere in the middle. I think your understanding of how it should be done is absolutely correct. I will be glad to send you a bit, if no one else has already done so, but I know that it will take quite a while to get there. Or, you can just order it from AS.
