I just completed a new tank for my KR-2 made of carbon fiber, 7781 glass inner
liner, and kevlar on the outside. I used Shell 862 resin and TETA hardner, the
same stuff they used to use at Lancair. I worked there for ten years part time
and they used the Shell 862 on all of their parts. Due to it's toxic nature
they switched over to a Jeffco resin system which is still toxic but not as bad
as the Shell stuff. At no time did they ever use vynl ester resin in their
planes. everything was epoxy resin. I haven't been there for four years so I
don't know what they're doing now but I doubt if they use the vynl ester. It
and polyester resin desolve epoxy. We used Shell resin to slosh a leaky 235
wing tank once. Just poured it into the gas cap and let it run down to the
lowest part of the tank where the leak was.
