Normal aircraft practice is to cover wood with cloth, made easy with heat shrinkable Dacron and stits (Poly Fiber)process finishes. You apply finish to the wood, add cloth and shrink tight, and then a coat off Poly-Brush to connect the cloth down to the initial coating. This is very easy and simplifies the finishing process. It's lots easier that fixing grain-checking later.
