You can use nylocks, but you need to flox them to the back of the spar. It is
a lot easier to flox on a nut plate than it is with just a nut. I used the
MF5000-3 http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/hapages/anchornuts.php nuts
from Aircraft spruce. They are self locking and plenty strong. I would have
loved to use something like a T nut, but I don't know of any that are aircraft
quality.

I drilled through the hinges and the spar with a drill bit that was undersized
enough so I could tap the screws right into the wood and keep everything
aligned while I did all the holes. After the holes were all drilled I used a
larger bit to drill the spar holes the correct clearance size. I used short
screws with some washers under the heads to just catch the first few threads of
the nutplates (So I wouldn't hit the deformed self locking portion of the
nutplate and loosen them up when the temporary screws were taken out. You can
reuse nylon lock nuts a few times, but all metal lock nuts are only supposed to
be used once.) and used thick flox being carefull not to get any in the threads.

I also countersunk the hinge and used flat head screws. The hinges I took off
had pan head screws with a hole drilled in the opposite half of the hinge to
clear the screw heads. If you countersink the hinges make sure that the screw
head is not sunk completely into the hinge material. I left mine sticking out
about .020". That left more meat on the hinge for the screw to hold down and
still gave me full down travel on the ailerons without the screw heads hitting.

I originally had three hinge pieces about a foot long each. I replaced them
with a continuous hinge per the plans. Some people say to use one long hinge.
Some say to use separate pieces so if the wing flexes and bends the hinge it
won't bind.

I am copying this to the list so that other people can disagree with any of my
methods. Aileron hinge attachment is enough of a safety issue that you should
have more than one opinion.

Do I have to use nut plates or can I use nylocks?
Thanks

cutting wheel on the dremel to cut out about a 1.5" X 1" rectangle just
forward of the spar. You can dig out the foam and see what you have and
flox in new nut plates if you need to. Repairs are fairly easy. Just
stuff
in a chunk of foam, sand down to the glass a couple of inches around the
hole, and put on two plies of glass. I didn't even need any filler, just
five or six coats of smooth prime and some sanding.
