You call it cute, I call it beautiful. It saved my A** once so it is
flight tested. All I need to sustain flight is to run 1 fuel pump,
pulling one amp or less, so a four AH battery, even with
alternator failure is quite adequate to get me to an airport. If
it's just an alternator failure I have my Odyssey 680 to carry all
the load necessary. My pre-start check is to check voltage on backup
battery and run fuel pumps and check for pressure. Any failure
constitutes a no-fly condition which, on several occasions in 550
hours, has happened. If I leave the "backup battery charge" switch
in the "on" position after a flight it will run the battery dead
before the next visit to the airport and results in a quick $50 trip
to AutoZone if I want to fly that day. :-( So, I guess it's good for
getting my butt to an airport, even with complete alternator and main
buss failure. And, maybe you're right, it is really just cute, not
beautiful, but when it saves your bacon it takes on a whole different
appearance.
