I guess I should have thought of sending Marty an email first,
I have one out to him now.
Because I have changed out the gear to fixed from retract and had the engine
off and the option to update the engine dropped in my lap at the same time,
I missed something or I thought I missed something when I attempted to
install the cowl and it didn't fit anymore.
When I went over a bunch of pictures of before the gear change I noticed
that the valve covers didn't line up on the fuselage like they did before.
It is much higher than it used to be. I know the simple solution is just
building a new motor mount, but still makes me curious what changed.

why one would put the engine 4 inches higher than another? that would be
good to know for my own future build which will certainly include used
components. maybe I missed it?

This is a good question to send to <info at greatplainsas.com>. Marty Roberts
owns the company now. Marty built his KR with a VW eons ago and has been
good friends (and neighbor) with Dan Deihl since at least that time, so
undoubtedly holds the answer to your question. I'm sure he wouldn't mind
answering if you ask. If Marty doesn't have the answer, I'm sure he wold
contact Steve Bennett who sold those cases since their inception until he
sold Great Planes to Marty last year.
