This is a good question to send to <info at greatplainsas.com>. Marty Roberts owns the company now. Marty built his KR with a VW eons ago and has been good friends (and neighbor) with Dan Deihl since at least that time, so undoubtedly holds the answer to your question. I'm sure he wouldn't mind answering if you ask.
