I have bought a few of those ball bearing at Ace Hardware over the years to replace several that I have lost. Just noticed while looking through the Spruce catalog last night that they now stock them.
I always cut the outer wire sheath with a cutoff wheel in a Dremel. I cut a little then let it cool so it does not melt the plastic liner too bad, but a little melting of the liner really does not hurt it. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: KR> A-790 Vernier Control Cable From: Mark Langford via KRnet <krnet at list.krnet.org> List-Post: krnet@list.krnet.org Date: Thu, October 02, 2014 7:45 am To: "'Teate, Stephen'" <STeate at compositecooling.com>, "'KRnet'" <krnet at list.krnet.org> Stephen Teate wrote: >>If I remember correctly it may have been the vernier that had some internal components so when you take it apart be careful with it. Alex, Yep, there's a detent ball that will fall out if you pull the knob out something like 3.75" or more (that probably varies), so take it apart slowly and on the carpet in the middle of your living room floor. Doing that on a crowded shop bench is an invitation to lose it immediately (personal experience there). Look up the part number on the ACS website and you will find instructions as to how to reassemble it, if it's not obvious...and also how to order spare balls! Been there, got two of them...and have likely already lost the spare! To avoid another SNAFU, measure twice and cut once. I managed to screw that up too...cut the cable instead of the housing and was about four inches short! Best to leave it a little long, just in case, and you can usually find room to put some extra cable slack, or worst case, cut it again after it's installed and you have a better idea of exactly how it's going to run...
