1156 and 1157 bulbs were very common on earlier cars.  I'd do a quick web 
search for which cars used them (and it will be a long list), and then hit 
the junk yard and cut one out of a tail light harness.  I've always driven 
VWs, and I'm pretty sure my Karmann Ghia, Scirocco, and Rabbits that era all 
use them.  1156 is another one, but  the pins are different to keep you from 
interchanging them.  The 1156 has one filament, the 1157 has two...two 
different sockets.
